Here is a very special blade even by Tosho standards - an awe-inspiring 390mm Honyaki yanagiba forged by none other than Master blacksmith Genkai Masakuni. Genkai Masakuni is the only living student of the late Okishiba Masakuni, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest Honyaki blacksmiths in Japan. Okishiba Masakuni was also one of the pioneers in making high-end Honyaki blades as we know and love nowadays.
The blade from its original shape (which was less than ideal) took about 80 hrs to re-finish - every part of the blade was shaped, ground and elevated through a traditional style of polishing. All of this was done by Ivan Fonseca of Tosho Knife Arts. The most striking aspect of this expertly ground and shaped blade is the way he brought out the hamon. The subtle and elegant, milky white hamon line that clouds over the blade is very difficult to keep our eyes off.
The sheath and the presentation box for this magnificent blade was made specially for this knife as well. It comes with a friction fit saya, and a Charcoal-Ink style Kiri box that was adjusted by Ivan to fit the whole blade perfectly and tightly.
All in all, this is one of those blades that truly deserves the term 'masterpiece'. And that is rare.
