HI-CONDITION Leather Strop (Rubberwood base)
$53.00
We are very proud to carry these top-notch, handmade leather strops by Yuji Osada of HI-CONDITION, headquartered in Asakusabashi.
This full-grain cowhide leather is combination tanned and is sourced locally in Japan. Combination tanning involves techniques of old traditional vegetable tanning and modern chrome tanning, and will cause the leather to patina beautifully over time. It has been cemented on to a Rubberwood base with rubber feet, thus giving the strop a bit of height and stability when in use.
The cowhide leather features a slightly brushed and incredibly smooth finish that offers refined honing to your sharp edges thanks to its tight grain structure.
The corners of the leather is trimmed by hand using an edge beveler, offering a crisp aesthetic and showcasing Osada-san's attention to detail.
A leather strop is our favourite way to hone the edge of a knife.
When used properly, a leather strop is an invaluable tool for day-to-day maintenance that does not damage a blade and hones the edge more accurately than steel honing rods. It works on any type of edges (razors, single bevels, double bevels, Western knives, Japanese knives, etc) so it delivers incredible value.
One caveat, if the knife is too dull or very thick, a bare leather strop is not very effective; in such case, sharpen it on stones instead. We recommend this tool for any knife user looking for a hassle-free, budget-friendly, and accurate way to maintain an edge without going full dive into sharpening stones.
