Konosuke x Studio Khii Oak Oval with Ebony Ferrule Handle
For 165mm - 180mm ST / 210mm YNG
One of the core values Konosuke has brought to this industry is their dedication to pushing conventional ideas in the knife making community. Their strong attention to detail of a knife's functionality and comfort is second to none, and can be seen in their lines like the HD2 and Fujiyama series. That same drive and dedication is shown in the handles of each and every knife. Crafted by Toshiaki Umemoto of Studio Khii, a reputable Japanese furniture maker and designer, their style on traditional handles take on modern and elegant characteristics.
These handles have a thinner profile than most oval shaped handles on the market. The sides are almost completely flat, giving the handle the shape of a stack of Japanese Ryo coins. The perfect shape highlights the Konosuke logo burnt into the end of the handle. This handle provides a very comfortable grip for both left and right handed users. The ebony ferrule gives the handle a touch of luxury and adds to its durability. This would be a great upgrade for any knife you choose to match with it.
This specific piece is made from Japanese white oak. This wood is commonly used in martial arts equipment as well, timber for construction purposes, and wood ornaments. It is a softer hardwood comparable to maple or cherry wood. It can dent and abrade fairly easily so care should be taken when storing it. Despite that it is a very dense wood and can withstand the demands of any kitchen.
To maintain its timeless look, hand wash the handle with a mild dish soap and wipe it dry to avoid any excess moisture retention. You can also seal the wood with a food safe sealant such as beeswax. Oils such as linseed and tung oil would also be appropriate, though they would darken the color of the wood significantly.
