Komon Seji Okuda Hakeme Sake Cup
Seji Okuda makes contrasting black and white ceramic dishes in Shigaraki. Shigaraki is known as one of the famous cities for ceramics in Japan, and there are many pottery shops along the big road running through the heart of Shigaraki, with many ceramic artist living in the area.
Okuda was born and raised in Shiga prefecture, and his father was a Shigaraki ceramic artist and teacher. From a young age, he watched his father work and was surrounded by ceramics each day. Now that Okuda has become a potter like his father, the memories of his father who left a long time ago are revived through making ceramics and using his workshop everyday.
Seji Okuda's ceramics use sticky clay, and Okuda told us that he is particular about using clay that is not too rough, not too powdery and has moderate roughness from Shigaraki's clay shop. Many of these rough clay items in Japan are heavier, but we were surprised when we picked it up his ceramics, that they were lighter than expected. His ceramics makes you feel calm and relaxed like nature, wonderful for use everyday.
How to properly care and use ceramics:
-This is made of clay.
-Light coloured pottery may change colour if left for a long time with oil or dark sauce. Please wash as soon as possible.
-Recommend to wash by hand. Never dishwashing machine as this may crack the ceramic.
-Please dry well to protect them from mold.
-Not recommended to use in a microwave.
-Not to be used in oven.
-When storing in layers, you can prevent them from chipping by layering a cloth or paper in between.
With a little effort, you can use the vessel made with attention to detail for a long time.
